Common IR Treatments

1. Disease-Varicose Veins, Treatment- Endovenous Laser therapy (EVLT)

Varicose veins is a common disorder involving legs, where the veins become prominent and tortuous. With time disease increase and patient develops changes in the legs in the form of swelling pigmentation and later ulceration. This disease can be treated by laser therapy. It is superior to surgery in results and there are no scars in the body.

2. Disease-Backache, Treatment- Percutaneous laserdisc decompression (PLDD) and Image guided nerve blocks.

Backache is a common disorder involving young and old patents. Most of the patients get relieved by drugs and physiotherapy. If pain persists more than two months other forms of treatment should be considered. Patients can be treated by injection treatment or by laser treatment. It is effective in more than 80% of patients. Only some of the patients require Surgery.

3. Disease-Liver Cancer, Treatment- Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) and Transarterial Chemoembolisation (TACE).

Liver cancer is not an uncommon disorder. It may be small or large. The cancer may be suitable for Radiofrequency treatment or surgery. Cases which are inoperable are treated by chemoembolisation. It involves angiography of the liver. Then the artery which is supplying the tumor is selected and drugs are delivered into the tumor in a special manner.

4. Disease-Blockage of Arteries, Treatment- Angioplasty and Stenting.

The blockage of arteries of the legs is not uncommon. Patients have pain on walking, walking at rest or in severe cases gangrene occurs. The arteries which are blocked can be opened by angioplasty balloon, stent or drugs. It is done by angiography the blocked vessel is crossed and angioplasty is done with balloon which opens it up restoring the blood flow. If situation demands, then stent is required to keep the artery open.

5. Disease-Brain Aneurysm, Treatment-Endovascular Coiling of Aneurysm

Brain aneurysm is a disorder in which a bleb is formed in the brain arteries. When it leaks or ruptures it leads to catastrophe. This bleb or out pouching can be treated by angiography methods. One reaches the out pouching by a catheter and places coils with in it, till it gets blocked.

6. Disease-Aortic Aneurysm, Treatment-Endovascular Aneurysm Repair

The Aortic aneurysm is abnormal enlargement of the Aorta. When it reaches treatment stage, when there is significant risk of rupture leading to sudden death it needs treatment. The treatment involves isolating the aneurysm with a special stent.

7. Disease-Fibroids, Treatment- Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE)

Fibroids a common non cancerous tumor of the uterus. It may cause pain, bleeding and heaviness. If the fibroids needs treatment, then they can be treated by embolisation using angiography methods. The uterine artery is selected for embolisation. Tiny particles are pushed into the uterine artery resulting in blockage of blood supply to the tumors. This involves hospital stay for day or two.

8. Disease-Leakage of Arteries- nose bleed, intestinal bleed, trauma bleed, heavy bleeding in urine, leaking from blood vessel disorders, Treatment- Embolisation.

There can be leakage from the arteries internally or externally. It may be possible to treat these problems by angiographic methods.  Embolisation involves blockage of the artery by particles ,coils or liquid agents.
